Benefits of facilitated conversations
Conflict is a normal part of life. People may experience disagreements with friends, family members, colleagues or within the wider community. Conflict can be challenging and learning how to navigate it constructively is an important life skill.
For many people, having a difficult conversation with the other person can feel overwhelming. It can feel easier to ignore the issue, to rely on messaging as the sole form of communication or just cut the relationship out completely. Strong emotions can be hard to face and it can be difficult to see the situation from another perspective.
This is where a facilitated conversation or conflict coaching can help and be a growth experience for all participants.
Creating a safe space to talk
I aim to provide a structured and supportive environment where everyone involved has an opportunity to speak and be heard. This could look like a library, a cafe, or an outdoor space - it can be tailored to the preferences of the parties in conflict.
As an impartial facilitator, I will help guide the conversation, ensuring that each person has a chance to explain their perspective without being interrupted or dismissed.
Conflict can sometimes become focussed on proving who is right or wrong, and a facilitated conversation aims to shift the focus to understanding. You will be encouraged to listen to the other person's perspective and consider how the situation has affected them. This doesn't mean you will have to agree with each other, the aim is to develop empathy for each other and strengthen the relationship that already exists.
Building communication skills is a lifelong endeavour and takes practice. Participating in a facilitated conversation can provide you with the template for future difficult conversations, improve active listening skills, and build resilience.
Moving forward
A facilitated conversation doesn't guarantee that everyone will agree or that every conflict will be resolved in one discussion. What is really provides is an opportunity to slow down, hear different perspectives and repair relationships.
These experiences can be powerful learning opportunities. With the right support, conflict doesn't have to be something you avoid, it can become an opportunity to develop communication skills, understand others, build confidence and learn how to handle difficult situations in a healthier way.
